How to Compress Images Without Losing Visible Quality

A single photo from a modern phone can be 4–10 MB. That is far too large for a fast website, an email attachment or most upload forms. Compressing your images keeps them looking good while making them a fraction of the size.

Why image size matters

  • Faster websites: images are usually the heaviest part of a web page. Smaller images mean faster loading and better Google rankings.
  • Email and chat: smaller files send quickly and do not hit attachment limits.
  • Upload forms: job portals and government sites often limit photos to a few hundred kilobytes.
  • Storage: save space on your phone and cloud drive.

How to compress an image

  1. Open Compress Image.
  2. Select your photos.
  3. Pick a quality level and an output format.
  4. Download the smaller images.

Choosing a quality level

Most photos look the same to the human eye at around 70–80% quality but are dramatically smaller. Go lower for thumbnails, and stay higher for photos that will be printed or zoomed.

Choosing a format

  • JPG: the most compatible format for photos.
  • WebP: usually smaller than JPG at similar quality, and supported by all modern browsers. Great for websites.
  • PNG: best for logos, screenshots and graphics with sharp edges or transparency, but larger for photos.

You can also switch formats any time with Convert Image.

Resize first for the biggest savings

If your photo is 4000 pixels wide but will be shown at 1200 pixels, resizing it first with Resize Image saves far more space than compression alone.

Private and fast

Images are processed in your browser and are not uploaded to a server.

FAQ

Does compression remove quality?

JPG and WebP compression removes detail you are unlikely to notice. At very low settings, you may see blur or blocky areas, so preview before you use the result.

What size should website images be?

As a rough guide, aim for under 200 KB for large banner images and under 100 KB for regular content images.
