  • 100% free

Sign PDF documents without printing

Printing a document just to sign it, then scanning it again, wastes time and paper and usually produces a crooked, gray copy. Sign PDF lets you add your signature directly to the file. Draw it with your mouse, touchpad, finger or stylus, or type your name in a handwriting style, then place it exactly where it belongs on the page. The signed PDF is ready to send in less than a minute.

What can you sign?

  • Rental and lease agreements, house rules and inspection forms.
  • Job offers, contracts for freelancers and non-disclosure agreements.
  • School permission slips, report acknowledgements and consent forms.
  • Invoices, delivery notes, quotations and purchase orders.
  • Bank, insurance and service forms that accept scanned signatures.

How to sign a PDF

Step 1: create your signature. In the Draw tab, sign inside the box as you would on paper. On a phone or tablet you can sign with your finger. If you prefer, switch to the Type tab, write your name and choose a style. You can pick blue, black or red ink. Blue ink is popular because it makes clear that a document was signed, not photocopied. Use Clear to start again.

Step 2: place it on the page. Choose the page number, then click or drag on the page preview to move your signature. Use the size slider to make it bigger or smaller. The dashed outline shows exactly where it will appear.

Step 3: download. Click “Sign and download”. The tool adds your signature as a transparent image on top of the page and gives you the signed PDF. Only the signature area is added; the rest of the document is unchanged, so text remains sharp and searchable.

Is an image signature legally valid?

In many countries, an electronic signature is any electronic sign that shows you agree to a document, and a picture of your handwritten signature is accepted for a wide range of everyday paperwork. However, some documents, such as certain property deeds, court filings, financial or government documents, may require a certified digital signature backed by an identity check, or a wet ink signature. The rules differ by country and by organisation. When in doubt, ask the person or office receiving the document what they accept. This tool does not provide legal advice and does not add a cryptographic certificate.

Your signature stays with you

Your signature is personal and should not be stored on unknown servers. This tool works completely in your browser. The signature you draw or type exists only in this page while it is open, and the signed file is created on your device. We do not receive, store or see your signature or your document. Close the page and the signature is gone.

Tips for a neat signature

  • Sign larger than you need. The tool trims the empty space and you can reduce the size afterwards, which keeps the lines smooth.
  • On a computer, a touchpad or a pen tablet usually gives a more natural signature than a mouse.
  • Zoom out of the page preview in your mind: signature lines on forms are usually about a quarter of the page width wide.
  • If the document needs your signature on several pages, sign one page, download, then open the signed file again and sign the next page.
  • After signing a form, use Flatten PDF to lock any filled-in fields as well.

Signing on behalf of a company

If you sign for a business, place your signature above your printed name and job title, and add the company stamp if your organisation uses one.

How to use Sign PDF
