Resize PDF changes the paper size of every page, for example from US Letter to A4 or from A3 to A4. The content is scaled to fit the new page and centred, so nothing is cut off.

What does resizing a PDF mean?

Resizing a PDF changes the paper size of its pages, for example from US Letter to A4, or from A3 down to A4. The content of each page is scaled so that it fits the new size, and it is centred on the page. Nothing is cut off and nothing is stretched out of shape. This is different from compressing a PDF, which reduces the file size in megabytes, and from cropping, which trims the edges.

When you need to change PDF page size

  • International documents. North America uses Letter and Legal paper, while most of the world uses A4. Resizing makes a document print correctly in another country without the printer cutting off the edges.
  • Official submissions. Courts, universities, visa offices and government portals often require all pages to be A4 or Letter. Resizing makes a mixed document consistent.
  • Printing large drawings. Plans, posters and diagrams made for A3 or larger sheets can be scaled down to fit a normal office printer.
  • Booklets and handouts. Scaling A4 pages down to A5 creates a smaller, handier format.
  • Mixed page sizes. Merged documents often contain pages of different sizes. Resizing gives every page the same size, which looks cleaner and prints more predictably.

Options explained

New page size sets the target paper: A4 (210 × 297 mm), A3 (297 × 420 mm), A5 (148 × 210 mm), US Letter (8.5 × 11 inches) or US Legal (8.5 × 14 inches).

Orientation decides whether pages are portrait or landscape. “Same as each page” keeps landscape pages landscape and portrait pages portrait, which is usually what you want. You can also force every page to portrait or landscape.

Margin adds empty space around the content. Choose a small or large margin if you plan to bind or hole-punch the printed pages, or if your printer cannot print close to the edge.

How the scaling works

For each page, the tool works out how much the content can be enlarged or reduced while still fitting inside the new page and its margin. It uses the same factor for width and height, so circles stay round and text keeps its proportions. When the shape of the original page is different from the new one, for example when going from Letter to A4, a thin white band appears at the top and bottom or at the sides. The content itself remains vector based, which means text stays sharp and can still be selected.

Resize vs. print settings

Most print dialogs have a “fit to page” option, which also scales content. The advantage of resizing the file itself is that the result is permanent and predictable. Anyone who opens or prints the file gets the correct paper size without having to change settings, which matters when you submit documents to other people or to online portals.

Privacy

The resizing is done entirely in your browser. Your PDF is not uploaded, stored or viewed by us. Links and form fields on the original pages are not carried over to the resized pages because their positions change.

Tips

  • Going from a large size to a small one makes text smaller. Check that small print is still readable.
  • To remove white borders before resizing, crop the document first.
  • To put several pages on one sheet instead, try the N-up PDF tool.

Quick size reference

A5 is half of A4 and A4 is half of A3, so moving one step between these sizes scales the content by about 71 percent in each direction. US Legal is as wide as US Letter but three inches longer, which leaves extra white space at the bottom when you convert normal Letter pages to Legal.

How to use Resize PDF Pages

  1. Select your PDF file.
  2. Choose the new page size, orientation and margin.
  3. Click "Resize PDF" and download the result.

Frequently asked questions

Will my content be stretched?

No. The proportions are kept. If the shape of the page changes, white space is added around the content.

Can I convert Letter to A4?

Yes. Pick A4 as the new page size.

What is the difference between A4 and Letter?

A4 is 210 × 297 mm and is used in most countries. US Letter is 216 × 279 mm and is used mainly in the USA and Canada. A4 is slightly narrower and taller.

Does resizing reduce the file size?

No. Resizing changes the paper size, not the number of megabytes. Use Compress PDF to make the file smaller.

Can I resize only one page?

This tool resizes all pages so that the document is consistent. To resize one page, extract it, resize it and merge it back.

Yes. All tools on this website are free to use, with no sign-up needed.

Are my files and data safe?

Yes. Everything is processed inside your own browser. Your files and text are not uploaded to our servers.
