  • 100% free
  • Files stay on your device
  • No sign-up

N-up PDF places several pages on one sheet, for example two pages side by side or four pages in a grid. It is perfect for printing handouts, saving paper and making booklets easier to read on screen.

What is an N-up PDF?

N-up is a printing term that means placing several pages on a single sheet of paper. The letter N stands for the number of pages: 2-up means two pages per sheet, 4-up means four, and so on. Printers and print shops have used this layout for decades to make handouts, proofs and booklets. This tool creates an N-up PDF that you can print on any printer or share as a compact digital file.

Why put multiple pages on one sheet?

  • Save paper and money. Printing a 40-page document 4-up uses only 10 sheets. That is a big saving for long reports, lecture notes and drafts.
  • Handouts for presentations. Slides exported to PDF are often mostly empty space. Six or nine slides per page make a neat handout that people can write on.
  • Proof reading. Seeing several pages side by side makes it easier to check layout, headings and page breaks across a document.
  • Easier reading on screen. Two pages side by side on a landscape sheet look like an open book and fit wide monitors well.
  • Study notes. Students often print lecture slides 4-up or 6-up to keep revision notes short.

Choosing the right layout

The tool offers four layouts. 2 pages places two pages side by side on a landscape sheet, which keeps normal text readable. 4 pages creates a 2 by 2 grid on a portrait sheet, a good balance for slides and documents with large text. 6 pages uses a 2 by 3 grid and suits presentation handouts. 9 pages uses a 3 by 3 grid and is best for thumbnails, image proofs and slides with very little text.

You can also choose the sheet size. A4 and US Letter are standard office paper. A3 is larger and keeps text readable even with four or more pages per sheet. “Same as original” uses the size of the first page of your document.

Spacing and borders

The space option controls the gap between pages and around the edge of the sheet. A small gap looks tidy and leaves room for printers that cannot print to the very edge. Choose no gap when you want the pages as large as possible. The border option draws a thin gray line around each page, which helps readers see where one page ends and the next begins, especially when the original pages have white backgrounds.

Quality stays sharp

Unlike tools that turn pages into pictures, this N-up tool places the original page content on the new sheet as vector graphics. Text stays crisp when you zoom in, and it can still be selected and searched in most PDF readers. Pages that are rotated in the original document are turned so that they appear the right way up in the grid. Each page is scaled to fit its cell without being stretched.

Private by design

All the work is done in your browser. Your document is not uploaded anywhere, so this is a safe way to prepare handouts from internal reports, exam material or client documents.

Printing tips

  • In your print dialog, choose “Actual size” or “100%” so the layout is not shrunk a second time.
  • For double-sided printing of 2-up documents, choose “flip on short edge” in the printer settings.
  • If text looks too small, choose A3 sheets or fewer pages per sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Is the text still sharp?

Yes. Pages are placed as vector content, so text stays crisp at any zoom level.

Which layout is best for printing?

Two pages per sheet on A4 or Letter landscape keeps text readable. Four or more pages per sheet suit slides and thumbnails.

Can I select text in the N-up PDF?

Yes, in most PDF readers. The original page content is placed on the sheet as vector content, not as a picture.

What happens if the number of pages does not fill the last sheet?

The last sheet simply has some empty cells. Nothing is cut off and no blank pages are added.

Can I make a booklet with this tool?

Two pages per sheet gives a booklet-like layout. For true saddle-stitched booklets the pages must also be reordered, which printing software usually does in the print dialog.
