Change the title, author, subject and keywords of a PDF.Edit PDF Metadata
Edit PDF Metadata lets you see and change the hidden document details that appear in PDF readers and search engines: title, author, subject, keywords and creator. You can also wipe the existing details before sharing.
What is PDF metadata?
Every PDF can carry a small set of hidden details about itself, called metadata or document properties. The most common fields are the title, author, subject, keywords, the creator (the program used to make the document) and the producer (the software that wrote the PDF file). You do not see these details on the page, but PDF readers, operating systems, document management systems and search engines read them. This tool shows the current details of your PDF and lets you change or clear them.
Why edit PDF properties?
- Better titles. Browsers and PDF readers often show the metadata title in the tab or window instead of the file name. A file called “report-final-v7.pdf” can show a clean title such as “Annual Report 2026”.
- Search engine visibility. When PDFs are published on a website, search engines may use the title and subject in search results. A clear title and description can improve clicks.
- Privacy. The author field is often filled in automatically with the name of the person whose computer created the file, or with a company username. Clear it before sharing documents publicly.
- Organisation. Keywords and subjects make documents easier to find in large libraries and document systems.
- Professional finish. Clients and readers who check the document properties see your company name rather than a template or an old colleague’s name.
How to use the metadata editor
Select your PDF. The tool reads it and shows a table with the current title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer and number of pages. Type new values only in the fields you want to change. Empty fields keep their current value, so you do not need to retype everything. Keywords can be separated by commas.
If you want to remove everything that is already stored, choose “Remove all existing details first”. The tool then clears the old title, author, subject, keywords, creator and producer, and adds only the values you typed. Leave all fields empty with this option on to produce a PDF with no identifying details.
What changes and what stays the same
Only the document properties change. The pages, text, images, links and form fields stay exactly as they were. The modification date is updated to the current time. The file name is not part of the metadata; you can rename the downloaded file on your device as usual.
Good titles and keywords
- Keep the title short and descriptive, around 50 to 60 characters.
- Write the subject as one sentence that explains what the document is about.
- Use a few relevant keywords that people might search for, not a long list.
- Use your company or brand name as the author for public documents.
Private by design
Ironically, many metadata editors upload your document to a server to change its privacy-related fields. This tool reads and writes the PDF entirely in your browser, so your document is never sent to us.
Note that some PDFs also contain an extra block of XMP metadata used by professional publishing software. Most everyday readers use the standard fields that this tool edits.
Metadata and document security
Metadata is easy to overlook. Lawyers, journalists and companies have accidentally revealed internal authors, software versions and project names through PDF properties. Making a habit of checking the details panel before you publish or send a document takes only a few seconds with this tool and removes an avoidable privacy risk.
How to use Edit PDF Metadata
- Select your PDF file.
- Check the current details, then type the new ones.
- Click "Save details" and download the updated PDF.
Frequently asked questions
Why does metadata matter?
The title is shown in browser tabs and search results, and the author field can reveal personal names you may not want to share.
What happens to empty fields?
Empty fields keep their current value, unless you choose to remove all existing details first.
Can I see the details without changing anything?
Yes. Select your PDF and the current details are shown at once. You do not need to download anything.
Does editing metadata change the file name?
No. The file name is set by your device. Rename the downloaded file if you want a different name.
Why does the producer still appear?
Some PDF libraries set the producer when the file is saved. Choose "Remove all existing details first" to clear the old values.
