Turn filled form fields into normal content that cannot be changed.Flatten PDF
Flatten PDF makes the answers in a filled form part of the page, so they can no longer be edited and look the same in every PDF viewer. It is the last step before you send or archive a form.
What does it mean to flatten a PDF?
Many PDFs contain fillable form fields: text boxes, check boxes, radio buttons and drop-down lists that you can fill in on screen. These fields float above the page and stay editable. Flattening a PDF takes the current contents of every field and draws them permanently onto the page, then removes the interactive fields. The result looks the same, but the answers can no longer be changed, and the document behaves like a normal printed page.
Why flatten a filled form?
- Prevent changes. Once you send a completed form, the receiver cannot accidentally or intentionally change your answers.
- Display correctly everywhere. Some PDF viewers, phone apps and email previews do not show form field contents. Flattened text is part of the page, so it appears in every viewer.
- Print reliably. Certain printers and print services skip form fields. Flattened forms print exactly as they look on screen.
- Merging and uploading. When forms are merged with other files or uploaded to online portals, field values can be lost. Flatten first to keep them.
- Archiving. A flattened form is a stable record of what was submitted.
How to flatten a PDF
Fill in your form in a PDF reader as usual and save it. Then select the saved file here and click the flatten button. The tool reads every form field, draws its value onto the page and removes the field. When it finishes, it tells you how many fields were flattened, and you can download the new file.
If the tool says there is nothing to flatten, the PDF has no fillable fields. It might already be flattened, or the “form” may simply be lines printed on the page. In that case there is nothing to lock.
Before you flatten
Flattening is a one-way step. Check every answer, spelling and date before you flatten, and keep your editable copy in case you need to correct something later. The flattened file is the version you send; the original is the version you keep.
What flattening does not do
Flattening is not encryption and it does not add a digital signature. Someone with editing software can still change a flattened PDF in the same way they could change any other PDF, by editing the page content. If you need proof that a document has not been changed, use a certified digital signature service. For everyday forms, such as applications, registration sheets and order forms, flattening is the standard and expected step.
Privacy
Forms usually contain personal details: names, addresses, phone numbers, ID numbers and sometimes bank information. This tool flattens your form inside your own browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored, so your information stays with you.
Tips
- Use Sign PDF to add your signature before or after flattening.
- If the form contains comments or highlights you want to remove, try Remove PDF Annotations.
- Large scanned forms can be made smaller with Compress PDF before you email them.
Flattening forms for online portals
University, visa and job portals often ask for a single PDF upload. Their systems may read only the page content and ignore form fields, which means your typed answers can vanish after the upload. Flattening before uploading prevents this. Open the flattened file once before you submit it to confirm that every answer, tick and date is visible on the page. If something is missing, fill it in again in the original form, save it and flatten once more.
How to use Flatten PDF
- Select a PDF with filled form fields.
- Check your answers in the original before flattening.
- Click "Flatten PDF" and download the result.
Frequently asked questions
Can I edit the form after flattening?
No. Keep the original if you might need to change the answers later.
Why does it say there is nothing to flatten?
The PDF has no fillable fields. It may already be flattened or it was never a form.
Will my check boxes and radio buttons stay visible?
Yes. The current state of every check box, radio button and drop-down list is drawn onto the page.
Does flattening remove comments?
No. Comments and highlights are separate annotations. Use Remove PDF Annotations to delete them.
Is a flattened form smaller?
Usually it is about the same size, sometimes slightly smaller because the form structure is removed.
Is this tool really free?
Yes. All tools on this website are free to use, with no sign-up needed.
Are my files and data safe?
Yes. Everything is processed inside your own browser. Your files and text are not uploaded to our servers.
