Split in Half turns each page into two separate pages. It is made for scanned books and two-page spreads, where two pages were captured as one wide image.

What is “split PDF pages in half”?

This tool cuts each page of a PDF into two separate pages. You choose whether the cut runs down the middle, giving a left half and a right half, or across the middle, giving a top half and a bottom half. Each half becomes its own page in a new PDF, in reading order. It is the quickest way to turn wide scans of open books into normal single pages.

When is this useful?

  • Scanned books and magazines. When you place an open book on a scanner or photograph it with a phone, both facing pages end up in one wide image. Splitting in half gives you one page per book page.
  • Two-page spreads. Brochures, catalogues and comics are often exported as spreads. Splitting them makes them easier to read on phones and e-readers.
  • Booklet layouts. Some documents are designed to be printed two-up on a sheet. Splitting reverses that layout.
  • Forms with two parts. Tickets, receipts and certificates sometimes have two copies on one page. Splitting top and bottom gives a separate page for each copy.

How to split pages in half

Select your PDF and choose the split direction. “Left and right halves” is the right choice for open books and spreads. “Top and bottom halves” suits documents where two items are stacked vertically. Then click the split button and download the result. Each split page is followed by its second half, so a document with 10 wide pages becomes a document with 20 normal pages.

If only some pages need splitting, for example when the cover and back cover were scanned as single pages but the inside was scanned as spreads, type the page numbers in the Pages field, such as 2-15. Pages you do not list are copied without changes.

Rotated pages are handled for you

PDFs can store pages sideways and tell the viewer to rotate them on screen. The tool takes this into account. “Left half” always means the left half of the page as you see it, not as it happens to be stored inside the file.

What about the middle of the spread?

The cut is made exactly in the middle. Most books have a margin in the centre, called the gutter, so no text is lost. If your scan was not centred, a few letters may sit on the wrong side of the cut. In that case, crop the pages first with the Crop PDF tool so the gutter is in the middle, then split them.

Quality and file size

The tool does not turn your pages into new images. It sets a new visible area for each half, so the quality is exactly the same as the original. The file may become a little larger because each half is stored as a separate page, but the difference is small.

Like cropping, splitting hides the other half of each page rather than deleting it from the file. That is perfect for books and brochures. Do not rely on it to remove confidential information.

Your files stay on your device

Book scans and personal documents never leave your computer or phone. The splitting is done by your browser, and you download the result directly.

Tips

  • After splitting, remove blank pages or reorder pages with the Organize PDF tool.
  • Use Compress PDF afterwards if the scanned book is too large to share.
  • For scans with dark edges, crop the outside margins before splitting.

Frequently asked questions

When do I need this?

When a scanner or phone captured two book pages in one image, or when a PDF has two-page spreads.

Can I split only certain pages?

Yes. Enter the pages to split. All other pages are kept unchanged.

In what order are the halves saved?

For left and right, the left half comes first. For top and bottom, the top half comes first, which matches normal reading order.

Will my scan quality drop?

No. The tool does not recompress images. Each half shows the original content at full quality.

My book was scanned with right-to-left pages. What can I do?

Split the pages first, then use Organize PDF to swap each pair, or reverse the order if the whole book is mirrored.

Are my files and data safe?

Yes. Everything is processed inside your own browser. Your files and text are not uploaded to our servers.
