How to Crop Images for Instagram, YouTube and Profile Photos

Each platform shows images in a particular shape. Upload the wrong shape and the platform crops it for you, often cutting off heads or text. Cropping to the right ratio yourself keeps control of what people see.

Common aspect ratios

  • 1:1 (square): profile pictures, Instagram feed posts, product photos.
  • 4:3: classic photo shape, presentations.
  • 16:9: YouTube thumbnails, website banners, widescreen slides.
  • 9:16: Instagram and TikTok stories, Reels and Shorts.

How to crop an image to a ratio

  1. Open Crop Image to Ratio.
  2. Select your picture.
  3. Choose the ratio you need.
  4. Download the cropped image.

Crop from the centre

The tool trims your picture from the centre, so it works best when your subject is in the middle of the frame. When taking photos you plan to crop, leave some space around the subject.

Then resize

A ratio describes the shape, not the size. After cropping, set exact pixel dimensions with Resize Image, for example 1080 x 1080 for a square post or 1280 x 720 for a YouTube thumbnail.

Want a circle?

For round profile pictures and avatars, use Round Image.
