How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF (Including "Page 1 of 10")

Page numbers make long documents easy to navigate, discuss and print. If someone says “see page 12”, everyone should be looking at the same thing. You can add numbers to any PDF in a few clicks.

How to add page numbers

  1. Open Add Page Numbers to PDF.
  2. Select your file.
  3. Choose the position, the starting number, the text size and the format, such as 1 or Page 1 of 10.
  4. Download the numbered PDF.

Choosing the best options

Position

Bottom centre is the most common and works well for reports and theses. Bottom right is popular for business documents. Avoid placing numbers where they will cover existing text.

Starting number

If your document has a cover page that should not count, start numbering from a different value or remove the cover first and merge it back later with Merge PDF.

Format

“Page 1 of 10” tells readers immediately whether pages are missing, which is useful for contracts and forms.

Need more than numbers?

To add a company name, a title or the date along with numbers, use Add Header and Footer to PDF. For legal document sets, see Bates Numbering.
